If you own a swimming pool you are going to run into problems with Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) especially if you live in the Southwest United States. According to Wikipedia Total Dissolved Solids are referred to as, “a measure of the combined content of all inorganic and organic substances contained in a liquid in molecular, ionized or micro-granular (colloidal sol) suspended form.” Simply put this can be easier summarized by the calcium and other hardness minerals in the fill water along with salts etc. This is one way that a variety of swimming pool industry people recommend that you should drain your swimming pool. Although this is one way you can test for hardness minerals in the swimming pool if done correctly testing for calcium hardness should be the most widely used test for accuracy of needing to change out the water.
As water evaporates, hardness minerals stay behind in solution and overtime these hardness minerals start plating on the tile line, the liner, and equipment. Calcium literally starts slowly destroying your investment.
